Librarian of the Year & Spring Conference Photos

The CHILIS Librarian of the Year award is presented annually at our spring conference to honor a current youth services librarian who has contributed significantly to enriching library services to youth in New Hampshire. The 2012 award went to Jan Streelman of the Wiggin Memorial Library in Stratham.
In her award presentation, President Kathy Tracy said—
The list of her accomplishments is long and includes countless dynamic programs, both in the library and in the larger community…. A standout mention by both nominators is her make a Make-a-Difference Club, which offers children the opportunity to engage in service projects for the community. Clearly her dedication to children must give her boundless energy! She has excelled in every area of librarianship…
Her director states, “This library would be missing a piece of its heart without Miss Jan and the community would be much poorer.” In her own nomination letter, her assistant director emphasizes how very special Miss Jan is to everyone—colleagues, parents, teachers, community members, and most of all the children. She states, “I cannot imagine a better friend and colleague than Miss Jan.”

Congratulations to Gail Zachariah from Keene Public Library, recipient of the 2011 CHILIS Librarian of the Year award. Gail was selected by the CHILIS board after considering many worthy nominees, and the award was presented at the spring conference in March.
Her colleagues wrote:
“Gail is at the heart of the library. We are so proud of her. She has served on the Newbery committee and other ALA committees. Although hampered by ubiquitous budget constraints, Gail refuses to take no for an answer. She overcomes obstacles whether this means finding volunteers to supplement staff hours or money to launch projects—she always achieves her goal. She works tirelessly fueled only by her ever present cup of coffee. She is deeply, deeply committed to the idea of intellectual freedom and especially committed to the youth of our community. She is their advocate and support. She is intuitive to their needs and concerns, she knows hundreds of our teens and children intimately and they are moved by her compassion and care for them.”

Librarian of the Year Award

The CHILIS Board is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Librarian of the Year Award. Please consider nominating someone you know who has provided outstanding library service to youth in New Hampshire. Each year, CHILIS recognizes an exceptional youth librarian who helps to contribute to enriching library service for children and/or teens. The Librarian of the Year is announced at the CHILIS Spring Conference, which will be held on March 17, 2011 at Southern NH University in Manchester.
If you would like to nominate an individual for this award, please visit the award page for full criteria and the nomination form. Nominations should be postmarked no later than January 28th. Questions about the award may be directed to any member of the CHILIS board.
Spring Conference a Great Success!

The CHILIS Spring Conference, featuring the Kids, Books & the Arts Showcase, was held on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Southern NH University in Manchester. The food was tasty, the venue great, and once again, we enjoyed the entertainment provided by our KBA roster artists.
Congratulations to Carol Sanborn, Children’s Librarian at Hampton Falls Free Library, who was honored with the CHILIS Librarian of the Year Award. Carol was selected by the CHILIS board after considering many worthy nominees, and the award was presented at the conference. Here’s what Carol’s director, Judy Haskell, has to say about her colleague:
“Carol is the embodiment of all the qualities desirable in a perfect youth librarian: she possesses a sunny disposition; an understanding of children’s developmental needs; a love of children’s literature; an appreciation for parental concerns; exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; a sense of humor; a caring manner; a strong desire to learn; and a willingness to be of assistance to both patrons and staff. Carol has created a Youth Services department that is the envy of many libraries. Her insight, dedication, energy, and ability to relate to all age groups have made her an invaluable part of our library and what we offer to the community.”
You make us all proud, Carol! As a colleague you are friendly, caring, and generous—not to mention funny! Thank you for sharing your many talents with us.
