In July 2016, Nancy Lang, who worked at the Dunbarton Public Library as the Children’s and Teen Librarian, passed away after a battle with cancer. Probably no one in the NH library community had a longer tenure on the CHILIS Board than Nancy. Nancy joined the Board more than 15 years ago, and served in various roles including Newsletter Chair, Treasurer, conference photographer and CHILIS webmaster. Nancy’s “institutional memory” was invaluable, and she helped the Board grow as a governing body. Nancy gave countless hours toward the work of CHILIS and shared her wisdom and sense of humor with all of us. She welcomed new members to the organization, donated many items to conference raffles, and offered her technical expertise to many of our projects. She will be greatly missed, both by those of us who served with her over the years as well as by many children’s librarians around the state.
After months of planning by a committee of 10 NH librarians, the NH 1000 Books Before Kindergarten project is ready to be launched! We have created a resource page that will help you begin or continue a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten early literacy program in your community. We are also taking orders for canvas bags that can be used as incentives for families participating in this project at your library. The deadline to order bags is September 23, 2015. Bags will be sent to libraries the end of October. If you have any questions, please contact Ann Hoey.
If your library offered a summer reading program for any age level, please complete the online evaluation–after you have concluded your summer reading program. This evaluation form can be found on the summer reading tab’s drop down menu above on the CHILIS website.
Please complete this evaluation even if you did not use the CSLP theme. We not only use your feedback to help improve CSLP’s services and products, but we also need to compile statistics about summer reading programs for federal reporting purposes.
You will not be able to make a copy of your responses, so you may want to save your data and responses in a different document as you enter information into the online form.
Thank you so much for all of your help!

Please read CHILIS Committee Reports before the CHILIS Spring Conference Business meeting on March 5.
Do you have multiple copies of a children’s book that a book discussion group would welcome? Are you willing to lend this set of books to another public library in NH? If you answered yes to these two questions, please consider adding this book to the CHILIS On-the-Move Book Club holdings in NHU-PAC. You just need to complete a survey, and your information about the title will be entered into the statewide catalog. To enter the book titles, please visit the CHILIS On-the-Move Book Club Kit page, also located under the Resources tab above.
If you want to borrow a kit, you can search for one using NHU-PAC. Kits are sent via the van just like any ILL item.
The 2014 Kids, Books and the Arts Roster includes 12 presenters who will do programs for NH libraries during the “Fizz Boom Read!” summer reading program. Libraries can apply for grants to bring these presenters to their communities this summer by completing an application by Friday, March 28 at 4 pm. For information about the presenters and their programs as well as the grant application, please visit the Kids, Books and the Arts page on the State Library website.
The manuals for the 2014 CSLP Summer Reading Program were distributed at the CHILIS Fall Conference. Librarians who have not received a set of manuals should contact Ann Hoey at Ann.Hoey@dcr.nh.gov
If your library conducted a summer reading program for adults during the summer of 2013, please take a moment to complete the online evaluation. Your feedback is important, and we make use of all of the statistics!
